The God of Mockery and Criticism

Momus: The God of Mockery and Criticism - new Version

I did something here that I have never done before. I reworked the original picture of Momus.

After reading your comments yesterday I noticed that most of you got distracted by the bull and the guy with the door in his chest. These were things I took from a fable about the god where he had to judge a man, a bull and a house and found them all at fault. The man because you can’t see his heart, the bull because it doesn’t have eyes in his horns to guide it when it was charging and the house because it doesn’t have wheels to roll it away when you have troublesome neighbours. So I wanted to include that in the picture. Well, the house I removed because it was too large. I tried. 🙂

As my main interest was to display the god of mockery and criticism, I took your criticism to heart and removed the guy and the bull. I also increased Momus in size so he looms over the people. The final composite I also processed differently, because I had to apply the paint anew.

Please take another look at the picture and let me know what you think of the new version. I also hope that it conveys what I wanted to say with the picture in a better way.

For your reference, you can still see the original version of the picture below.

When the backbone is missing, the soul collapses.

I’m always happy to see when someone can summarize complex topics in one succinct sentence! Thank you for that!

Dat is een God die ik liever in een gesloten doos laat wegroesten…
    Geef mij maar opbouwende vernieuwing

Ik denk dat hij vandaag de dag heel belangrijk zou zijn als god van de kritiek.
      Bedankt.

The head on a stick is creepy, who’s the dude holding it? 🫣

    1. rabirius Avatar

Well. the guy holding the mask is Momus himself. 🙂

I’m confused – ha ha. The head on a stick – with or without the judge dude – I would get. But the bull’s head and the dude
in the lab coat (?) – all up at the front? “Gods” – I’d get… but “God”? Maybe those are the enforcers. I guess there is a lot
to contemplate. I’m more of an optimist. I miss “Peeping Tom” ….

Well, the head on a stick is more supposed to be a mask.
The guy has a door in his chest and the bull has eyes in his horns. They is all part of the mythology. 🙂

I can’t help thinking of the Café Momus that was the setting for the second act in Puccini’s La Bohème, where Musetta sings her famous aria.

Well, could be that it was named after Momus. There were a lot of pictures of Momus during the Renaissance and also in later periods.
